Arrival Story

My Arrival Story

My name is Rana and I came to Australia last year. I arrived in Brisbane on 19 May 2009. I travelled with Emirates from Iran with my husband and two children but I couldn’t sleep on the plane so I read for a while and then watched a few movies.

I arrived at Brisbane airport at 7:30 in the morning. My husband’s cousin and her family were there to meet us. When I saw her cousin, I felt very happy because I hadn’t seen her for a long time so we both embraced each other and we were so excited.

She took us to her house in Wakerley and we talked about Iran and my family. That night I was very excited to be in a new country but I also felt a bit sad because I missed my friends back home.

The next day she took me around the city. I walked along the beautiful South Bank riverside and the parklands. I liked the city because it was clean and it wasn’t crowded.

I was certain that I would have a good future in Australia because there are many opportunities here for me, however, I need to improve my English first.

  3. My Arrival Story

My name is Sophie Kim and when I first came to Brisbane on 17 January 2008, I stayed with my friends for a couple of days.

Then I started to work on a farm at Gatton for a few months. My job was to pick up a lot of vegetables and fruit but it was a nightmere of job, however, I found the money quite helpful at the time.

Meanwhile, I tried to find a job in the city because the farm was about 2 hours far from city.

Getting a job in the city was so difficult because at that time economy was down turning. Even though I found a job in a hotel as a housekeeper.

I met my boyfriend who was a building manager when I was working there in that hotel and since then we have been together.

Due to my visa requirements I had to go back to Korea on 16 Junary 2009 because my visa was about to become expired. Therefore, I left the country for 6 weeks and I came back again under a different visa this time.

When I came back to Brisbane I found a casual job in Chermside at Tea bar. I used to make tea there because I wanted to study English and develop my professional skills. I worked there until March 2010 and after that I decided to come back to college and study more English.

I have been happy in Australia so far and I hope I could get a job as a receptionist in one of the government departments.

My name's Linda Horee and I'm from Thailand. I came to Australia with another 8 people on April 2007 and we all had working visa for 4 years.

I arrived at the Brisbane airpot in the morning and I felt very nervours when I arrived however later I became excited.

My manager came to airport pick up us to our accommidation at Springfiled Lake.

After that we unpack our stuff and had a rest. I could have slept for a week if I could.

That night my manager took us to the Thai restaurant for dinner and we had a chat to get to know each other, however, I felt very lonely and home sickness. I didn't enjoy much because I felt sick.

The next day we went to Dream World which was very fun for everyone and we had a wonderful time there. Our fun day didn't finish there because we went to Gold Coast after that to have dinner. It was a lovely restaurant and a delicious food.

The next day we started work straight away and since we strated working together everyone became good friends of each other.

I never forgot my first day in Australia as I had mixed feelings. Excited and nervous. Happy but lonely.

  8. My Arrival Story

When I came to Australia, I was very tired because the flight time was 16 hours plus the time that you delay between one and other plane.

Nobody of my family was waiting for me only may husband's friends, because all his family live in Sydney, but his friends were very gentle and they tried to make feel like family.

When we installed in home, decided to take a shower and rest, after that, we went to take a coffee at South Bank and we had a good chat in there.

Really, my life in Australia has changed all it is different now but like everything in life, has its advantages and disadvantages.

My name's Purnama Muntelivit (Mia), and I am from Indonesia.I came to Brisbane in June 2008.

I flew from Jakarta to Brisbane by myself because my husband had already come back Brisbane.

I was really excited when I arrived in Brisbane because we met eachother after a while and of course we had a big hug on arrival. After that we had lunch together at Breakfast creeck restaurant.

I was very tired when I arrived however I was excited to be here in Australia and to start my new life.

Soon after finishing our lunch we went back home to rest. I could sleep for a week because I was tired.

I found Brisbane quiet compare to my city because in my city, Jakarta- people are out until mid night. Besides you can shop until late and see people walking on the street. But I was shocked that in Brisbane businesses close at 5 pm and everyone go to bed at around 8:30.

Although I was shocked about these things, I was surprised to see how people taking care of their city and keep it clean. Also I found Australians friendly and open-minded.

So I felt both sad and happy when I arrived here in Brisbane. Now I am more settled down and I have only missed my family a lot. I hope I could visit them soon.

We woke up in the evening and we enjoyed the picturesque views of Brisbane city while we had tea and coffee together on the balcony.

We liked Brisbane very much because it wasn't only a clean city but it was very quiet as well.

Our feelings were mixed on the first day because we had missed our families and friends however, we were so happy to be in a safe and nice country like Australia.

    My Arrival Story

My husband, my son and I came to Australia in May 2005. We arrived in Brisbane at about 9 o'clock but nobody was waiting for us to arrival because we have no family, friend or relative here in Australia.

We first caught a train to Sunshine Coast, because my English class was at Sunshine Coast university.

This is a beautiful university and it has wonderful wild kangaroos, and my son and I used to enjoy looking at them.

After we arrived in Sunshine Coast, we looked at our place and we loved it. It was small but nice and clean.

We had lunch and we slept until 10pm because we were tired. Then we watched movie and we went to bed again at about 5am.

We were so excited to be here in Australia because everything was new to us.

We came to Brisbane later when my husband changed his job and got a new job in the city.

  14. My Arrival to Australia

My parent, all my siblings and I arrived in Australia on 7th of June 2010 by plane.

My first day in Australia is exciting to remember because we had a very nice journey. Do you know what are the reasons behind it?

Let me tell you in a brief in the next few paragraphs. We had launched our flight from Dhaka Airport to Kualalumpur at 01am and it took us four hours to get there. After arriving there we had to wait for two hours to get another plane. It was boring to wait there, however, we did it.

After that we took another flight from Kualalumpur to Sydney by a different airline. Before arriving at the Sydney airport we looked at lots of desserts of Australia. Soon after our arrival at Brisbane airport Qantas security officers checked our luggage. As result of having no illegal goods in our luggage, we were let to enter the Brisbane City.

First we caught a taxi to get home. As it was night time the city was shining by the light around the highways. We were all amazed by the beauty of the Brisbane city. I thought I was in another planet.

Once we got home I was really surprised to see such a beautiful house with such a green environment.

Finally we had our dinner at our new home provided by our implementing organisation. But how do I conclude it here because it's a big shock for me to leave all my friends, colleagues and others in my own country. However, the diversity of new environment, new culture, new traditions and customs would make me open- minded and respectful to others.

In general, my first day here in Australia was full of joy and excitement.

My name is Yuvi and I came to Australia last year. I arrived in Brisbane on 4th June 2009.
It took 8 and half hours by plane.

While I was waiting for the departure in Taiwan , I came across my high school history teacher! She wanted to visit her son as her son studied master in Brisbane. We chatted about our lives until on aboard.

I couldn't sleep on the airplane because I felt amazing to see my teacher and I also couldn't wait to see my husband. As the result, I wrote diary and listened to some music on the plane.

I arrived in Brisbane at 9:30am. My husband was there to meet me. When I saw him, I felt very happy since we haven't seen each other for a long time. I introduced my husband to my teacher and she felt happy with us.

Before my husband and I got home, he took me to visit his new office. Compared to Taiwan, that was a really nice working environment. We talked about our families and interesting things that had happened for a while and later we went out for lunch.

After lunch, we took bus to city. My husband taught me where I can take the bus and showed me around the city.I found beautiful Brisbane rivers as well as some lovely parks and we took lots of photos.

After around the city, both of us were tired so we came back to our comfortable house. That night I was very joyful about being in a new country but I felt a bit sad as well because I missed my family in Taiwan.

After living in Australia for a year, I got used to it. Although there are still some barriers for me, however, I was certain that I could overcome all of them and used to living in Australia.

I never forget the day that I arrived in Australia.

I came to Brisbane on 5th May 1999 by Quantas Airlines. The plane flow to brisbane via Sydney so it took about 9 hours to get here in Brisbane.

It was excited because this was my first time to be abroad but I was a bit nervous because I could speak English a little. I was not able to fill the custom form out myself but I asked an old lady who was sitting next to me to do it for me.

When I arrived at the Brisbane airportto the custom officer asked me some questions and then he let me go. I didn't know the way out so I followed other passengers.

My partner was waiting for me outside and when he saw me waved his hands while he was smiling. We both were very happy to meet each other again.

On the way to the boat, he told me that he wants me to study English at QUT Red Hill. He said that the cost was expensive but he had already paid the fees and I had to start.

We went to a supermarket to buy some vegetable and fruit for dinner. I cooked a delicious Thai food because my partner loves Thai food. We had a great dinner with the stunning view of Brisbane City at the night time.

    I never forget that night.

When I first arrived in Brisbane on 28th March 2010, I was so excited. Because I'd never been abroad. But in the other hand, I was anxious and tired because I had to say good bye to my parents, my family members and friends on the last day in Korea.

My husband and I were waiting for Australian permanent visa for 7 months and it was great to be here in Australia, however, we had to leave our established life behind us.

The weather was so hot and humid when we arrived in Brisbane and it shocked us because we left Korea when it was spring. We caught a train from Brisbane airport to Roma Street Station where we booked our hotel. We were so tired when we arrived so we slept until late night. Then we went downstairs to buy food for dinner and I remember that we had Hungry Jacks.

I liked Australia when I arrived because it was clean, green and the its weather was sunny and warm. People also are very friendly.

We stayed in that hotel for about 2 weeks. Meanwhile, we applied for our Medicare card and we also started looking for a rental unit. We also got our mobile phones and when we signed the contract we connected our internet.

Now I am happy here in Australia and I want to have further study at TAFE and get a good job in the future.

I’ve never forget the first scenery of Brisbane behind the window in plane ! That was so amazing ! The beautiful sea shore and many house between trees and bushes with orange , red and brown roofs! It transferred many positive energy to me after more than 24 hours flight ,but it couldn’t reduce my anxiety about facing to new people and new place that I’ve never been there .
We arrived here on 10th October 2010 at 9 am . One of my husband’s ex colleague had waited for us at the airport . I was very nervous because I’ve never seen he and his family .
The first day in Brisbane wasn’t so good .I slept for 4 hours continuously because my child hadn’t had seat in plane and he slept on my feet during all the flight ,So i was not comfortable and i couldn’t sleep at all .
Totally the first week wasn’t so good and I don’t like to remember those days ! but i knew we can experience many good things in Brisbane and the most important and helpful thing that we always have is : “ HOPE “ that it motivated us to try more and get used to the situation .

  22. Farideh, good piece of writing. Well done. I just made a few changes in that writing.

    My arrival story

I’ve never forget the first scenery of Brisbane which I saw through the window in plane! That was so amazing! The beautiful seashore and many houses between trees and bushes with orange, red and brown roofs! It gave me a lot of positive energies after sitting in a more than 24 hours flight, but it couldn’t reduce my anxiety about facing new people and new places that I’ve never seen or been to.
We arrived in Brisbane on 10th October 2010 at 9am . One of my husband’s ex- colleagues had been waiting for us at the airport. I was very nervous because I had never seen him and his family before.
The first day in Brisbane wasn’t so good. I slept for 4 hours continuously because my child didn’t have a seat in the plane and he slept on my lap during the flight, that’s why I was not comfortable and as a result I couldn’t sleep at all.

In short, the first week of our arrival wasn’t so good and I don’t like looking back on those days, but I knew we would experience many good things in Brisbane later.
I think one of the most important and helpful things that we always appreciate is :
“ HOPE “ that motivates us to try more and adjust ourselves to new situations.
